Creating a website is only the initial step towards obtaining success online. Getting noticed would be step two, and doing this for free only requires some creativity and design tweaks, plus some general knowledge about how search engines work to improve your website ranking.
A website ranking is the placement of a website on a long list of other websites that are similar in content. Rankings and the results are created when someone does a keyword search. The obvious place to be for maximum impact and to generate the greatest number of visitors would be number one on that long list. It is generally agreed that if a website is not within the top 30 or so listings for a keyword search, it may as well not even be on the list. Getting listed within the first page is the goal, and there are simple free ways to improve your website ranking.
1. The first way to improve your website ranking is to make your website search engine friendly. This means to optimise the page to react to those searches. Find and select appropriate keywords and work them into copy on your landing page and Meta tags. The keywords should appear within the first 200 words and not be overly used (stuffing) because the search engines will ignore excessive usage.
2. Be sure you have created keyword appropriate Meta tags.
3. Make sure your website is easy to navigate. On page links should contain keywords, not just show “click here” notations.
4. List your website with major free website directories, and submit to local search engines geographically. Include Meta tag information.
5. Add links to your website whenever you send out emails or do blog entries,
6. Check with Google, Bing and Yahoo search engines to see where your website ranks.
7. Incorporate social networking into your marketing plans.
8. Establish links to and from your website to others.
9. Make regular updates to your website. If it sits untouched for a time, ranking will drop.
10. Continue to monitor your progress towards improving your website ranking so you can make any needed adjustments.
